2006
Full comments by the American Press Institute judges for awards won by the Provincetown Banner in the New England Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest 2006.
Design — 1st place
It is refreshing to read a newspaper that doesn’t run interesting, authentic photos just on its cover pages — but throughout the publication. This commitment to making the Banner visually interesting pays rich dividends. The clean pages and attention to typographic detail — crisp headlines, handsome text, functional labels, readable listings — show just how much impact tabloid pages can have when used for community news.
Educational Reporting — 1st place
Pru Sowers, with Emily Sussman, Kaimi Lum and Sally Rose (for the Banner’s three-part series on issues facing the Provincetown school system)
A thoughtful, well-created series on the Provincetown school system, its history, its challenges and its future. Written with intelligence and style, the series presents problems and possible solutions, as well as responsible commentary. Informative, useful and never boring.
Editorial Cartoon — 1st place
Howie Schneider
“Well, they certainly kept the crowds down.” The cartoon is drawn with endearing simplicity, the caption is deliciously understated, the attitude is justifiably smart-alecky — and the message is absolutely local. Combine all these qualities and you have a winning commentary on the Provincetown fireworks debate.
Pictorial Photo — 1st place
Ann Wood (for her photo of Long Point at dawn)
Eye-catching image. Subtle pastels, calm water reflecting the land, lighthouse and sky produce an incredibly serene view of Long Point. This image invited the viewer to step into the picture. You can almost hear the lapping of the water and the cry of a gull.
Sports Story — 1st place
Michael Iacuessa
A well-done piece about a victim of HIV using sports to deal with, if not to overcome, the illness. While sympathetic, Michael Iacuessa avoids being weepy and allows his subject to tell his story in a surprisingly dispassionate manner.
Government Reporting — 2nd place
Mary Ann Bragg (for a story on Provincetown’s finances)
Few questions cut to the centrality of local government than how public money is collected and spent. The reporter digs deeply into the financial situation from numerous angles and explains such jargon as “chart of accounts” and “schedule A.” Readers are able to see how their town handles the money and how politicians are doing their jobs.
Illustration — 2nd Place
John Andert (Home Improvement special supplement cover)
Great cover illustration. Excellent cartoon style that really fits with headline treatment and colors. Great composition and style to the illustration. Superb work!
General News Story — 2nd place
Mary Ann Bragg (for story on anti-gay marriage petition)
Good job on blanket coverage of major local issue.
1st Amendment Reporting — 2nd place
The Banner and reporter Mary Ann Bragg would not take no for an answer, no matter how often it was said. The paper battled for release of complaints against the police stemming from July 4, 2005 confrontations. It took four months, but the paper prevailed and the people of Provincetown won.
Self Promotion — 2nd place
Designed by Barbara Mullaney
This ad series was simple but attractive. I liked the use of color and the easy-to-read layout. Hopefully you received a good response from retailers.
In-Paper Circulation Promotion — 2nd place
Designed by Barbara Mullaney with the Provincetown Banner Readers!
Provincetown Banner’s “What’s Black and White and Read All Over” promotional theme was colorful and played very well off the old children’s riddle that everyone knows. I thought the ads all tied together well and the idea of the readers submitting photos of themselves reading the Banner was great. The dog with the glasses was my favorite.
Headline Writing — 2nd place
It’s tough to write an informative headline in a tight count, and although decks might alleviate some of the pressure, the headline writers of the Provincetown Banner manage to come through. One of the techniques that the editors put to excellent advantage is the use of strong verbs that don’t overstep the bounds of the story.
Editorial — 2nd place
Sally Rose (for “The Golden Rule is an apt guide”)
This was a difficult and courageous editorial to write. The Banner, in a difficult situation, has risen above the fray and exercised its role as the voice and conscience of the community. It has not only provided a reasonable frame of reference for its readers but also provided an admirable statement of its own standards and values.
Investigative Reporting — 3rd place
Mary Ann Bragg (for reporting on the July 4th complaints against police)
Mary Ann Bragg’s reporting shows outstanding presistence. I don’t think I’d want her “coming after” me. The determination to force disclosure of complaints against the police department is especially commendable.
Newspaper Web Site — 3rd place
The Provincetown Banner’s website has an exceptional amount of news stories, arts and entertainment stories and photographs. It is top-quality material in abundance.
