Judi Dench deftly portrays a twisted obsession with Cate Blanchett in “Notes on a Scandal.” |

In the Arts
The most bravura acting of this year belongs squarely to British women. Helen Mirren in “The Queen,” marching regally toward the best actress Oscar, and Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett who create a beautifully orchestrated pas de deux in the darkly witty and razor sharp psychological thriller “Notes on a Scandal.” In any other year but Mirren’s, Dench would be a shoo-in for Best Actress. But “Scandal” is truly a two-character piece, as balanced as a duet. Dench and Blanchett create such a rhythmic tension that escalates in emotion that they really can’t be judged separately.
