Finding the spirit in today’s art colony
Local film premieres at Film Fest
You may not be familiar with Shirl Roccapriore’s name, but the Provincetown resident is poised to make a blip on the radar this week when she and her two sidekicks, Lauren Kleciak and Deb Ondo, premiere their documentary, “ArtSpirit,” at 5 p.m. Thursday at Art House 2 in Provincetown. Another screening will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Crown & Anchor as part of the Provincetown International Film Festival.
Born of an inspiration to document and set in stone the thoughts, memories and history of Provincetown’s renowned artists, this tribute to the oldest continuous art colony in America also addresses the issue of affordable housing as struggling artists are forced to vacate the tip of the Cape in search of residences that better fit their wallets.
“I’m already seeing people leave because it’s too expensive here,” says Roccapriore. “This is an artists’ colony. We’re going to lose this rich feeling if they all go. What’s going to happen?”
