The art of giving art
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
'Tis the season to be shopping, fa-la-la-la-la, and as soon as the turkey leftovers have been popped in the fridge, it's time to begin. Fortunately, the Outer Cape offers a break from mall choices and has fairly painless ways to find truly unique gifts in all the individually owned stores and galleries that abound.
And what could be more unique than art?
Several galleries between Provincetown and Orleans hold Small Works shows during the holiday season. Small refers to size and often price, but not quality. It's an opportunity to think of art in terms of gift giving without breaking the bank or of treating yourself to something original and beautiful. This weekend kicks off those shows, and next weekend, the first annual holiday gallery walk will take place in Provincetown.
In Provincetown's East End gallery area, the Alden Gallery opens its doors for the first time and is having a grand opening from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Its first exhibit will be a group show of the gallery's 11 artists. Alden Gallery is located at 423 Commercial St. in Provincetown. Drinks and refreshments will be available, and works by Liza Bingham, Ed Christie, Kevin Cyr, Cathleen Daley, Alice Denison, Joerg Dressler, Robert Glisson, Robert Morgan, Mark Palmer, Anne Salas, and Laurence Young will be on view. In the spirit of the holiday, a percentage of sales during Thanksgiving weekend will be donated by the gallery to local charities.
The Alden Gallery, launched by Stephen Syta and Howard Karren, will be open on weekends (Sat.-Sun., 12-3 p.m.) through Jan. 6, and then by chance or appointment through March.
In a release, Karren says the gallery will offer work ranging from representational to abstract, tranquil to unsettling, but never without respect for the 100-year traditions of the Provincetown art colony.
Joerg Dressler and Laurence Young have shown locally and established a loyal following; Liza Bingham, Cathleen Daley, and Alice Denison are recent M.F.A. graduates of the Massachusetts College of Art at the Fine Arts Work Center; each has a unique and daring approach. Robert Glisson hails from Syracuse; Robert Morgan from San Francisco; Kevin Cyr from Brooklyn; and Mark Palmer, who owned the Mark Palmer Gallery in Paducah, Kentucky, now lives in Buffalo. Anne Salas is a former glass blower who lives on the Cape and has studied with Selena Trieff; she's making her Provincetown gallery debut. Ed Christie is a sculptor with a history of building and designing Muppets for Jim Henson and Sesame Street.
In addition to the first foray into the local scene by Alden, several galleries are holding openings over the Thanksgiving weekend. Included in Provincetown are Bowersock Gallery, 373 Commercial St. (2-4 p.m. Sat.) and Simie Maryles Gallery, 435 Commercial St. (11 a.m.-5 p.m. Fri.), each with small works shows, and the Fine Arts Work Center, which is asking for Outer Cape artists to drop off works for a regional art show that opens the following week.
In Wellfleet, Harmon Gallery at 95 Commercial St. and Sandpiper Gallery have openings from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday of their Small Works shows and Sandpiper bumps up the evening with live music by Big Jazz.
In Orleans, Tree's Place, Route 6A at 28, breaks with its usual Saturday opening schedule to hold a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday for its holiday show. On Saturday, Gallery 31, 31 Main St. kicks off from 2 to 5 p.m., Elizbeth Rowley Fine Art, 76 Route 6A joins in from 5 to 7 p.m. and Addison Art Gallery, 43 South Orleans Road opens their show from 5:30 to 7:30. Left Bank Gallery, 8 Cove Road holds a gala party from 4 to 7 p.m.
Saturday to celebrate their holiday show. The Left Bank show will feature work from the artists in all three Left Bank locations in Orleans and Wellfleet.
The following week, in conjunction with Holly Folly Weekend, over a dozen galleries in Provincetown are joining forces to hold the first Provincetown Art Walk on Dec. 1. Refreshments will be served and special works will be on display.
The Banner will follow up on the Art Walk next week when the number of participating galleries is finalized.
