Olympia Dukakis joins festival lineup
The Tennessee Williams Festival held in late September in Provincetown may still be a long time off but it’s never too early to line up stellar talent and they have. This year, Academy Award winning actress Olympia Dukakis will take part in the festival.
Dukakis cut her theatrical teeth on Williams’ work and playing Stella from “A Streetcar Named Desire” in Maine summer stock was her first professional role. To bring things full circle, Dukakis is appearing this month as Flora Goforth in Williams’ “The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore.”
During her career that included film roles in “Moonstruck” she played other larger-than-life Williams’ characters including Maxine in “Night of the Iguana,” Serafina in “The Rose Tattoo” and Amanda in “The Glass Menagerie.”
Other Williams Festival highlights include a concert version of “Summer and Smoke,” an opera based on the Williams’ play of the same name and the Brooklyn on Foot street theater company with a fast moving “Camino Real” in which five actors bring 40 characters such legendary figures like Lord Byron and Casanova to life.
This year’s festival theme is The Power of Love.
Passes are now on sale. For more information on the festival events and tickets, log on to twptown.org
