Beachcomber has sizzling summer line-up
By Melora B. North Banner Staff
In case you didn’t know, summer is really here. As proof, the Beachcomber at Cahoon Hollow in Wellfleet is up and running and once again hosting some bands sure to rock this little spit of land into the universe. Recently named by Esquire magazine as one of the best bars in the country, the Beachcomber, now in its 30th year, is out to prove the mag right.
With the Incredible Casuals returning to perform every Sunday afternoon for their 28th year, they just may have something going. But it’s not just the tried and true that make this entertainment recipe gel, it’s new names as well.
Bonerama is traveling up from New Orleans June 20 to play some classic rock, from Hendrix to Zeppelin to the Stones, and they’ll also blast the stage with their four trombone frontline playing New Orleans funk and some improv. Then, on June 21, the Lustre Kings are up with a platter full of rockabilly, followed on July 3 by the Brew. From the North Shore, the Brew opened for Bruce Hornsby and is known for its improv and guitar-driven jams.
Garage Band Weekend, June 27 and 28, features Andrea Gillis, the Swinedells, Muck & the Mires, Stupidity and other bands to be named at a later date. From rhythm-and-blues-infused rock to good old American and British rock, the weekend will be anything but a quiet snooze.
Eek-a-Mouse comes to town July 9, and he’s anything but a meek mouse. This guy is one of Jamaica’s premier reggae stars, performing more than 200 shows a year. John Brown’s Body returns this summer for the weekend of July 11 and 12, then Bang Camaro lives up to its name when it performs hard rock and heavy metal on July 18.
Up next with a bit more calming sound are the Neighborhoods on July 15. Then on July 24, the Don McClosky Band comes direct to the Cape from the New York music scene. They offer a diverse playlist with traces of influence that range from Motown to the Beatles to Irish folk. Claws of Paradise and Squidda share the limelight on July 25, then the George Gritzbach Band follows up on Aug. 6.
The always popular Boston-based band Drunk Stuntmen entertains the audience with music and humorous banter on Aug. 7, then on Aug. 8 and 9 Apollo Sunshine brightens up the dunes. A WOMR radio station benefit is held on Aug. 13 when Eric Lindell is up. A.K.A. C.O.D. plays Aug. 15, featuring Dana Colley, a sax player from Morphine.
The Don McCloskey Band returns on Aug. 21 with their mix of sounds, and on Aug. 23 Drug Rug and Tony the Bookie Orchestra play.
