Two nights of dazzling dance
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
The Fourth Annual Provincetown Dance Festival gets underway at The Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford St. in Provincetown, at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25.
Presented by the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, the Provincetown Dance Festival provides the Outer Cape’s only annual dance event. Over the past three years the festival has grown from one modest evening to a mix of solo and troupe work and now to two nights of programs including individual dancers and full troupes from New York and Connecticut.
Dance fans are quick to say that theirs is an underserved audience and the Castle Hill-sponsored dance event looms large on the fall calendar. The festival presents the world of dance through live performances, panel discussions and workshops. There is no comparable experience offered on the Outer Cape.
This year’s festival will be a multi-day weekend consisting of two full-scale evening performances and post-performance “meet the artists” events.
Both evening performances feature full dance troupes. Performers include The Adam Miller Dance Troupe from Hartford, Conn.; Spectrum in Motion from Hartford; Scapegoat Garden from Hartford; Legacy Dance Company from Boston; Ori Flomin from New York; Sridhar Shanmugam; Nicole Wolcott from New York and Camille Brown from New York.
“The last three years’ events awakened interest in a genre of art that had been sorely missed in Provincetown, and we are proud that the Truro Center for the Arts is helping the community to celebrate dance and showcase such wonderful performers,” says Castle Hill’s executive director, Cherie Mittenthal. “Each year the festival gets better and better.”
The Adam Miller Troupe is seven years old and has been called innovative in its past performances of 14 original works by its founder and an additional 12 works by visiting choreographers.
Spectrum in Motion, directed by Olivia Davis, is dedicated to people of color and mixes movement from the world’s culture in a mélange of music from classical to contemporary. The troupe was founded in 1982.
Camille Brown, formerly of Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, has been honored with many awards and was noted in Dance Magazine as one of 25 to Watch. The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will preview a ballet by Brown in December.
Ori Flomin from Israel has been dancing in New York since 1989. He formerly danced with Stephen Petronio Dance Company and now serves as their rehearsal director. He is a frequent guest instructor in dance schools in Europe.
Debora Goffe and Scapegoat Garden is a collaborative dance group founded in 2002. The troupe’s themes are personal and universal and deliver a heightened theater experience.
Sridhar Shanmugam trained in India and worked with legendary dancer Chandralekha. He has toured worldwide for the past two decades. His work is a mixture of both classical dance forms and Indian heritage.
Nicole Wolcott is a choreographer, teacher and performance artist from New York City. She co-founded Keigwin & Company and is still the associate artistic director. Her work has been performed in spaces as varied as Symphony Space, Joe’s Pub, CBGB’s and the American Dance Festival.
Legacy Dance Company is directed by Thelma Goldberg and comprises the youth performing company of The Dance Inn in Lexington. They mix it up with tap, jazz, hip-hop, contemporary and musical theater.
Tickets for each performance are $28.50. A combination ticket for both evenings is available for $48.50. Premium seats are available at $103.50 for both nights and $78.50 for one night. Student and senior discounts are also available. Tickets may be purchased through P’town Tix at (508) 487-9793 or online at www.ptowntix.com.
