Various artists have decorated miniature dog houses for an upcoming auction to benefit the new dog park like this one by Susan Baker.
Art has gone to the dogs

A silent auction of 51 decorated miniature dog houses will be held through Nov. 1 at the Schoolhouse Gallery, 494 Commercial St. in Provincetown. The dog houses, diminutive works of art with a doggy décor, are on display now at Schoolhouse Gallery, 494 Commercial St.

The final bid-off is from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 1; a reception also will be held. Bidding closes at 5 p.m. with minimum bids of $100. The fund-raiser is to benefit the Provincetown Dog Park Association’s Pilgrim Bark Park being built on Shank Painter Road.

Earlier this year 8 x 10 x 10-inch unfinished dog houses were given to local artists to decorate. Artists who took on this biting challenge include Barbara Cohen, Brenda Silva, Jaime Elkins, Connie Tavanis, Ed Christie, Jason Gavann, Jim Rann, Joe Fiorello, Cherie Mittenthal, Nicoletta Poli, Katherine Baltivik, Ilene Charles, Chip Brock, Linda Davis, Candy Crawford, Candis Gillett & C.E. Provo, Denny Camino, TJ Walton, John Clayton, Jon Fowler, Choly, Terry Catalano, Michael Rogovsky, Pattee Durkin, Cid Bolduc, Conny Hatch, Moe Van Dereck, Ray Nolin, Mary Giammarino, Lauren Richmond, Susan Baker, Janet Picard, Jacqueline Perry, Bill Fitts, Ellen Langer, Polly Burnell, John O’Shea, Saidi, Joel Josselyn, Jenifer Sprague, Reenie Mossy, Keith Labasbas, Tamiko Kawata, Tom Acone, Lynne Foy, Thanassi, Walker-Tabor, Mike Carroll, Mimi Gross, Pat Bruno and KLS Furniture Maker.

As the list of artists might suggest, the works are as diverse as the entire community. Each artist is offering up some trademark work. Moe Van Dereck created a metal sculpture animal that is mounted atop his dog house. Conny Hatch has pulled out all the stops for her assemblage-laden house. Some have moving parts or removable elements to reveal other layers. Seen together they are an amazing display of light-hearted but excellent art.

Early bids are accepted by phone, email or in person, daily between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 8 p.m. The email address for bids and additional information is mike@schoolhouseprovincetown.com. For details call (508) 487-4800.
