Banner Daily Update posted Fri. April 20
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
In Wellfleet, the library is taking part in the national One Book, One Community program and has several events taking place this week.
Discussions about Tracy Kidder’s “Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World,” will continue this Sat., April 21, at 7 p.m; at the Wellfleet Public Library, 55 West Main St.
At this week’s discussion, Ed Cardoza of the Boston-based Partners in Health – Farmer’s organization – will give a presentation about the group’s work in Rwanda.
“Mountains beyond Mountains” is the book Wellfleet has chosen based on it’s theme of health issues in Haiti and the fact that a number of Wellfleet residents have become involved in assisting Haitians in creating products to sell abroad.
“Mountains Beyond Mountains” takes readers to Haiti, Peru, Cuba and Russia as it follows the journey of Dr. Paul Farmer, Harvard professor, infectious disease specialist and anthropologist, who in medical school discovered his life’s calling: to diagnose and cure infectious diseases and to bring the tools of modern medicine to those who need them most.
The book becomes an introduction to Haiti, it’s economic and health issues as well as the broader issues of health care in third world countries.
Wellfleet readers can also attend a Power Point presentation this Sun., April 22 at 3 p.m. by Ellen LeBow and Lisa Brown, who helped establish the Star/Fish Collaborative – an initiative in the village of Matenwan, Haiti that unites the community with arts and music programs. The events are free.
Brown-bag lunch discussions of the book everyone in town has been invited to read as part of the “One Book, One Community” project, continue this week and throughout the month. Discussions will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Wellfleet Public Library.
To read the book, call the library or go to www.wellfleetlibrary.org.
