TRURO—The community center project is out to bid.
Over the past year and half since plans for the community center first went to bid, the project has seen many obstacles and gone through many changes. The building committee has worked with architect Rob Meyer of Ammondson Architects Inc., in Cambridge, and Bill Reich, town project manager, to scrutinize every detail of the plans in an effort to deliver what the town wants for the price it wants to pay. Now, the light at the end of the tunnel is here.
Town Administrator Pam Nolan says more than 10 request for proposals have been sent out so far, mostly to filed sub-bidders whose deadline for returning them is May 8. General bids are due May 22.
Monday, the building committee went over the schematic plans page by page to make its final, fine-tuning changes to the 100-percent complete schematic plans. These changes will appear in an addendum and include a range of modifications from fixing typos to detailing the lighting systems.
“The volume of the specs is protecting us,” says Meyer.
In particular, careful attention is being given to the outside lights. Building Committee Chair Martha Nagy kept a keen focus on this issue both at the Monday meeting as well as during the site walk on Tuesday when she discussed the project with two electrical contractors. During both her discussions, Nagy pushed to be certain the proposed electrical system could accommodate an astronomical light timer that could be adjusted to Truro’s specific sunset, which differs slightly from more westerly towns in the Eastern Time Zone. Also of concern was making sure the circuitry was sufficient to allow for safety lights that would stay on after the normal outside lights went off.
