PROVINCETOWN – A lightening-fast robbery of Christina’s Jewelry & Gifts on Commercial Street netted thieves between $65,000 and $75,000 in high-end jewelry, the largest local robbery in recent history.
Acting Police Chief Warren Tobias said police responded to the alarm within 90 seconds of receiving the call but the thieves had already fled with the stolen gold and gemstone jewelry. The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene approximately 45 minutes later with a tracking dog, which followed a scent to the beach behind the post office but then lost the trail.
Christine Meegan, who has operated the jewelry store at the 215 Commercial St. location for 25 years, told police the value of the stolen jewelry was approximately $100,000. It is believed that at least one thief smashed a side window, entering the store there, while another broke the front window, scooping out all the jewelry in the display case.
The thief or thieves inside went directly to a locked glass case in the center of the store where the higher-end jewelry was displayed, smashing the case and grabbing the jewelry, which included many pieces set with valuable gemstones. The alarm was tripped at 3:36 am Wednesday, April 25. Although police responded within 90 seconds, Tobias said, there was still a short lag between when the alarm was tripped and the call to police.
“By the time the alarm goes off and goes to the alarm company, and the alarm company picks up the phone and dials the police, another minute could go by,” Tobias said.
Provincetown Police are working with the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department on the investigation, which Tobias termed “very active.” He said he couldn’t remember a robbery this large in Provincetown.
