Spouse & Red Molly — upcoming music
Banner Daily Update posted Sat. May 19
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
This weekend offers an opportunity to catch Spouse, an indie alt rock band, at the Squealing Pig in Provincetown on Saturday. On Monday, look for Red Molly, Ellis and Pat Wictor at the WOMR studios in Provincetown.
Compared stylistically to bands like Haircut 100, U2, The Cure and the Pixies, Spouse has a sound that is meaty and substantial while still offering plenty of air in its harmonies and instrumentation. There’s even a touch of Baby Animals and Patty Smyth in there. Easy to listen to does not do credit to the complexity of their work but like many accomplished bands, they prove that sometimes creating rock solid simplicity is the best way to create compelling sound.
Their local shows are at the Wicked Oyster, 50 Main St., Wellfleet, at 10 p.m. Friday and the Squealing Pig, 335 Commercial St., Provincetown, at 10 p.m. on Saturday.
Red Molly, Ellis and Pat Wictor, all of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival Preview Tour, will play at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the WOMR Studios, 494 Commercial St., Provincetown.
Red Molly is a New York trio that met at the 2004 Falcon Ridge Festival. After jamming together until sunrise, the three women — Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, and Carolann Solebello — agreed that they liked playing together as much or more than apart and Red Molly was born. In July of 2006 they released their first CD, “Never Been to Vegas.”
Wictor plays acoustic blues and folk and draws on the traditions found in rural country, gospel and blues. He plays lap slide guitar.
Ellis plays acoustic rock influenced by folk and country. She has five CDs and is working on her sixth with producer Ben Wisch.
Tickets to the WOMR event are $12, $10 for WOMR members. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
