WELLFLEET—Stickers bearing the letters “VZ” have appeared in recent days on road signs along Route 6 in Wellfleet. The initials stand for Von Zipper, a sunglass company with close ties to extreme sports like surfing and skateboarding. Whether these stickers are the result of a carefully laid guerilla marketing campaign or simply the primal urge of youth to mark one’s territory may forever remain a mystery. Either way, they signal the proximity of friendly territory to wave-seekers and ramp-riders alike.
Formerly located on the corner of Bank and Commercial Streets, the Sick Day surf shop
is now on Route 6 at Lecount Hollow Road. On June 2, Sick Day Surf Company is celebrating its third year in business with the grand opening of its new location with free food, fundraising, and beach clean-ups.
The owner of Sick Day Surf Company, Olaf Valli, grew up in Wellfleet and claims roots as far back as the Mayflower on his mother’s side, Newcombe. Just as his ancestors patrolled the beaches for the Coast Guard in the 1800s, Valli worked with the Surfrider Foundation to organize volunteers that will meet at the surf shop to then go and traverse the four area beaches for trash, including White Crest, Cahoon Hollow, Maguires Landing and Newcomb Hollow. Founded in 1984, the Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots environmental non-profit that works to protect oceans and beaches. Extreme athletes and environmentalists are encouraged to arrive Saturday morning to help.
