Memorial Day on the Outer Cape

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the summer and is generally seen as an indicator of what the coming season will bring. It is also a somber time of remembrance when veterans place wreaths and present the colors to honor fallen comrades.
The Outer Cape honored its war dead with ceremonies in Eastham, Wellfleet and Provincetown. The Coast Guard Color Guard marched along with the VFW Honor Guard and VFW Ladies Auxiliary. There were buglers, brief speeches, patriotic music, singing and a few tears. Crowds lined the streets and parks where the ceremonies were held, some holding children, some holding small flags, all holding dear the memory of those who gave their lives for their country.
The other side of Memorial Day, the side with beachgoers and visitors filling the streets, seemed a celebration of the living and all the possibilities stretching out into the future. Perhaps it is a fitting juxtaposition after all — honoring the past and hoping for the future.
