Provincetown started its July 4th celebration with a parade that snaked from the Cape Inn down Commercial Street through the throngs that lined the street. The day ended fireworks over the harbor.

This year’s parade had the usual quota of fire trucks topped with kids and adults decking out red, white and blue hats and in the case of the kids, face paint. A fife and drum band from Marlborough joined the lineup and the Provincetown Theater had folks from “Forever Plaid” and the Shakespeare on the Cape troupe in the mix. The VFW honor guard marched and a military hummer eased down the street. The peace and justice league had a float urging make levees, not war.

There were a few quintessential Provincetown additions like Miss Richfield on her scooter and Miss Ellie belting out songs from the back of a pedicab.

Candy rained down on the grateful and it was necessary to duck the water pistol wielding kids once in a while. Dogs barked, babies cried and slept, adults were thankful and proud, in other words just what you want for an Independence Day parade.

The fireworks started 15 minutes early in an effort to dodge the threat of cancellation due to rain. A fine drizzle fell for most of the display but did not dampen the spirits of the crowd or the beauty of the fireworks.

What it did do is ensure that the crowds headed for their cars and out of town as soon as the fireworks ended. There was the usual bottleneck of traffic and thousands worked their way out onto Route 6.

The fireworks committee urges anyone who had a great time to send in a donation to keep the event going.
