PROVINCETOWN – Selectmen took a concrete step towards repaving Commercial Street Monday when they hired an engineering firm to explore the costs and timelines involved.
The board voted unanimously to hire Stearns & Wheler, a Hyannis-based environmental engineering firm, for $14,832 to develop the costs and implementation timelines for resurfacing the town’s main avenue. Their report will be completed by Sept. 15.
Selectmen have indicated that repaving the street and sidewalks is a priority but said they need more information before deciding how to proceed. There are also several factors to consider, including how to deal with property owners whose private property encroaches onto town-owned property, how to schedule the project so as not to disrupt the summer tourist season and how to pay for a project that will likely cost several million dollars.
In addition, the selectmen Monday said they wanted to see options for a project timeline. A phased approach – repaving different sections of the street over a longer time period – had been raised but selectman Austin Knight said that he was leaning towards a quicker construction timeline.
“After seeing how long the sewer construction project has taken, I don’t want to phase this project in over three or four years,” he said, instructing Stearns & Wheler to factor ample overtime costs into the project budget to allow workers to finish more quickly.
