Skateboarders may be banned from pier

PROVINCETOWN – Concerned that skateboarders on MacMillan Pier could injure people passing by, the Provincetown Public Pier Corp. is considering banning boarders from the pier.
Pier Corp. board members Thursday complained to harbormaster Rex McKinsey that local youths practice tricks on the pier, often loosing control of their skateboards, which fly into traffic or at people walking or waiting on the pier.
“When that skateboard goes out from under you, it’s going like 20 or 30 mph. Somebody will get hurt,” said Phil Tarvers, Pier Corp. board member.
“We’re going to be faced with lawsuits because we’re allowing it out there,” added board member Kerry Adams. “It’s not a question of if, but when.”
Board members discussed imposing a temporary ban on skateboarders to warn them that uncontrolled skating will not be tolerated. If a temporary injunction is not effective, the boards could be barred for the rest of the season, McKinsey said.
“We’ve been scolding them,” he said. “The next step is throwing them off the pier.”
Len Clingham, Pier Corp. chair, said there could be a public outcry over removing all skateboarders from MacMillan Pier, either on a temporary or permanent basis. However, he pointed out there is a public skateboard park on Jerome Street where the boarders can practice their tricks. Normal skating on the pier, where users keep skateboards under control, would be acceptable, he said.
“This is something we have to get our hands around without looking like the bad guys,” Clingham said.
