Centennial celebration 100 years in the making

PROVINCETOWN – It was a party it took 100 years to plan.
Monday’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Pilgrim Monument went off without a hitch, attended by hundreds of residents and visitors, including dozens of Masons dressed in black tuxedos, top hats and bedecked with the ornate necklaces made up of the Mason’s “jewels,” the symbols of the stone cutters trade.
Dignitaries such as Sen. John Kerry, state Sen. Robert O’Leary and Representative Sarah Peake attended. So did a few dozen children from the town’s summer recreation program, gaily waving small American flags when the ferry from Boston bearing the Masons and their guests docked at MacMillan Pier. And so did Joanne Young Jaxtimer, the great granddaughter of William H. Young, one of the local businessmen who came up with the idea of building the monument.
