PROVINCETOWN Firefighters were called in Wednesday afternoon to standby while a device turned in by a National Seashore ranger was detonated. The device, a U.S. Navy smoke canister was found by the ranger on the beach and brought to Provincetown Airport which is located inside the Seashore boundary for removal and detonation.
According to acting police chief Warren Tobias, the circular gray canister was then transported to the Provincetown transfer station and landfill by technicians from the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad. With the fire department standing by, the canister was safely detonated by the bomb squad around 2 p.m. without incident.
Although not a common occurrence, such devices as well as unexplosed ordnance are sometimes found on the beaches or brought up in fishing nets.
The bomb squad deals with situations like this fairly often, Tobias said.
The sound of the blast could be heard in much of the town.
