Huge repaving project moves forward

PROVINCETOWN – After years of demanding that Commercial Street receive an end-to-end face lift, voters will finally get the chance to hit the accelerator as a result of action taken at Monday’s selectmen’s meeting.
The board voted 3-2 to insert an article on the Nov. 5 special Town Meeting warrant authorizing the town to borrow $566,380 to hire an engineer to survey the entire 2.5-mile length of Commercial Street and create a final design for the repaving, which, depending on budget restrictions, may include landscaping, new sidewalks, signage and street art. The price tag for the project is estimated to run between $4.4 million and $7.7 million, depending on the type of materials used.
A $7 million project would translate into a $175 annual tax increase for 20 years for a median single-family house assessed at $721,000.
There are several concerns about the project, however, that selectmen debated Monday night. In addition to whether the town can afford to take on such a large financial burden, there are multiple construction issues that residents need to understand before voting to authorize the project, selectmen said. Several complex issues ranging from private property intrusion on public ways to the need for handicap accessible sidewalks will also have to be taken into account.
