Alibi closes doors

PROVINCETOWN – The Alibi bar, a long-time watering hole in town, permanently closed its doors this past weekend, the victim of a landlord-tenant dispute over declining revenues.
Alibi owner Rich Corsino said his business was significantly hurt over the summer by construction in a privately owned condominium upstairs over the bar, located at 291 Commercial St. Although the owner of the building that houses the Alibi, Steve Boggess, no longer owns the second floor space, Corsino claimed it was his landlord’s responsibility to protect the bar.
“Financially, with the damage that has been done with the people working upstairs, we can’t recoup,” Corsino said. “This is it. This has been financial devastation to us. The bar will close this weekend.”
Boggess has filed eviction proceedings against Corsino, asking for $345,000 in unpaid rent from the summer, as well as rent owed over the two years remaining on the lease. Corsino said he stopped paying the approximately $14,700 monthly rent to Boggess in July after the daytime construction upstairs began interfering with his business. Revenue at the bar dropped to $25,730 in August, compared to $46,570 in August 2006, he added.
The Alibi, under different names, has existed as a bar in that location for approximately 50 years. It was originally called the Town House and was part of a restaurant/entertainment complex that took up the entire building. After closing for about seven months as a result of a loan foreclosure, Steve Melamed took over the lease in 1997, changing the name to Steve’s Alibi, named after George’s Alibi, a Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., bar owned by a friend. Melamed ran the bar for five years, then sold the lease to Corsino in 2002. Corsino opened it in April 2003 as The Alibi.
