Who Killed the Electric Car?
Banner Daily Update posted Fri. Oct. 19
The UU Meeting House Social Action Film Series presents “Who Killed the Electric Car?” tonight (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. The film screens at the Meeting House, 236 Commercial St. in Provincetown and admission is free.
The film deals with the history , development and commercialization of the electric car, particularly the General Motors EV1 which was available for lease in Southern California in the early ‘90s.
Auto manufacturers and the oil industry filed suit against the California Air Resources Board to overturn their mandate for electric cars. The film alleges that the Bush administration, heavily laden with former oil and auto company executives, also worked against going forward with electric cars.
GM worked to demonstrate that there was no demand for their cars, took them back and destroyed and majority of them, placing a few in museums. Although drivers who had leased some the cars offered to purchase them outright for $1.9 million, they were ignored by the car company.
This film explores the reasons behind those actions and takes a look at other alternative vehicle technologies.
