Rice to head Payomet
Banner Daily Update posted Sat. Oct. 20

TRURO — After nine years of bringing theater, comedy, music and more to audiences inside the big tent in Truro, Guy Strauss — founder and managing artistic director — is turning over the reins at Payomet Performing Arts Center in Truro to Kevin Rice. Rice officially takes over on Dec. 15.
Strauss had a great idea and he has worked tirelessly to turn it into reality. What if there was a theater in Truro? What if there were concerts, comedians, poets, storytellers all in one place? Starting with an empty lot on the Noons property near where routes 6 and 6A converge in North Truro, Strauss made it all real. He started with a rented tent long on aspirations and short on luxury.
Each year he’s expanded his offerings, usually producing at least two full-length plays with a wide variety of other events. As Payomet gained momentum Strauss made the decision to move over to the newly formed Highlands Center — the former North Truro Air Force Base now turning itself into a cultural and scientific center.
In a release this week, Strauss says, “As we head in to our second decade I felt it was time to bring in new blood, new ideas and vitality.” He goes on to says, “We need someone of Kevin’s immense talent and experience locally and in fact, internationally.”
Rice is excited to take on the job and says he intends to build on the solid base Strauss has created.
