PROVINCETOWN – People attending Thursday’s public forum to gather input on a proposal to repave Commercial Street will be presented with a new version that has been scaled back even further than previously discussed.
Town manager Sharon Lynn said the new consensus, based on feedback from local organizations, is to reconstruct Commercial Street from Johnson to Court streets only. An earlier plan called for a complete reconstruction of the main street from Howland Street to the Coast Guard station while the east and west ends of town would receive a cosmetic asphalt overlay.
Lynn said the latest proposal would reduce the cost of the project to approximately $2 million to $3 million, down from an earlier estimate of $4-7 million for a complete reconstruction of the entire 2.5-mile length of Commercial Street. That proposal included redoing the curbs, sidewalks and adding a variety of landscaping and lighting amenities.
The new proposal would also reduce the initial engineering fees for the project to approximately $200,000, down from the $566,380 selectmen had recommended be presented to voters for approval at the Nov. 3 special Town Meeting.
“This [new proposal] will focus on a smaller segment of Commercial Street. This takes in the central core zone of what we believe the feedback we received came in as,” Lynn said.
Selectmen have scheduled a public form at 6 pm Thursday, Nov. 1, at Town Hall to hear resident input on the repaving plan.
