Don’t forget to vote in Nov. 13 election

PROVINCETOWN — Voters here will head to the polls between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Town Hall, 260 Commercial St., to choose a new moderator and to weigh in on five ballot questions.

Two candidates are running for moderator, Richard Olson and Irene Rabinowitz. Both candidates are former Provincetown selectmen. Rabinowitz is executive director of Helping Our Women and has served also on the town’s finance committee, among other boards. Olson is a retired attorney.

Question 1 asks for a Proposition 2 1/2 override to assess an additional $340,700 in real estate and property taxes for supplemental funding for the town’s operating budget for fiscal year 2008. Question 2 asks for an override to assess an additional $165,000 to fund the collective bargaining agreement for the police union contract for FY ’07 and ’08.

Questions 1 and 2 were approved by voters at Nov. 5’s Special Town Meeting. A ballot vote is now required for the town to be able to assess the funds.

Questions 3 and 4, both of which were indefinitely postponed at Nov. 5’s Special Town Meeting, ask for capital exclusions; the first to assess $15,000 to pay for structural repairs to the concrete stairway that connects VMES, PHS and Grace Hall parking lot, and the second asks for $30,000 to fund the implementation of a new telephone system for town government.

Question 5 requests a debt exclusion for an unspecified amount of funds to pay for an engineering and design study for paving repairs to Commercial Street. This was voted down at Special Town Meeting.

According to Town Clerk Doug Johnstone, if voters at the ballot Tuesday approve any of the last three questions, the board of selectmen may elect to bring the articles back, within a reasonable time frame, to the next town meeting, which would be in April.

The selectmen voted on Aug. 27 to hold a special election on Nov. 13 to fill the remaining term of town moderator, to expire on May 5, 2009, left vacant by the election of Mary-Jo Avellar to selectman, and to place ballot questions before the voters.
