Harbor conference starts Saturday

WELLFLEET — The fifth annual State of Wellfleet Harbor Conference gets underway tomorrow at the Wellfleet Elementary School. The full-day affair will cover a range of topics, from the salt marsh dieback crisis to the Herring River restoration plan to the impacts of global warming on coastal habitats. Attendance is free.
The conference begins with a continental breakfast starting at 8:30 a.m., followed by opening remarks by Michael May, Wellfleet selectman, and Abigail Franklin, conference moderator. Presentations start at 9:15 a.m. with “Salt Marsh 101,” led by biologist Mark Bertness, a professor at Brown University, followed by “Salt Marsh Dieback,” led by National Seashore plant ecologist Steve Smith at 9:55.
Robert Buchsbaum will talk about the “Potential Impacts of Global Warming on Coastal Habitats” at 10:45 a.m., and MaryJane James-Pirri will discuss “The Horseshoe Crab — A Multiple Use Resource,” at 11:05. Following a lunch break, the conference wraps up with a preview of results from the Massachusetts Estuaries Project and an update on the Herring River Restoration Plan. Closing remarks will be made at 1:45 p.m. Question-and-answer sessions are scheduled throughout the day.
Field trips also will be held this weekend in conjunction with the conference. Wellfleet Shellfish Constable Andy Koch leads a shellfishing demonstration at 3 p.m. Saturday and Steve Smith a tour of salt marshes experiencing the dieback problem on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
