Lighting of the Monument
Banner Daily Update Wed. Nov. 21
PROVINCETOWN — The festive and eagerly awaited traditional lighting of the Pilgrim Monument is set for tonight, Wednesday evening, Nov. 21, the evening before Thanksgiving, precisely at 6 p.m., at the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum, on High Pole Hill. This will be the 22nd annual lighting of the Monument.
Nineteen strings consisting of more than 3,500 white bulbs will cover the Monument to commemorate Provincetown as the First Landing Place of the Mayflower Pilgrims on Nov. 21, 1620. The lights will remain lit through Jan. 6, 2008.
During the ceremony, a DVD featuring highlights from August’s Centennial Celebration of the Laying of the Monument Cornerstone will be broadcast. Refreshments will be provided and served by the Provincetown Business Guild. The lighting ceremony is open and free to the public.
There are several good vantage points from which to view the illumination, the best spot being the grounds of the Monument itself. Other sites include the Bas Relief Park on Bradford Street behind Town Hall; Town Hall lawn by the Veterans Memorial; along Commercial Street in front of Town Hall; and the area around MacMillan Pier, including the parking lot at the base of the pier.
