PROVINCETOWN — The traditional lighting of the Pilgrim Monument took place on Wednesday evening and hundreds attended, standing on the darkened hilltop waiting for the countdown to hit zero and light up the Provincetown skyline. The Monument got all dressed for the holidays with 3500 white bulbs hung on 19 long strings from top to bottom in a cascading display of spirit.
The Monument was constructed in honor of the Provincetown as the First Landing Place of the Mayflower Pilgrims on Nov. 21, 1620. To find out more about the history of the event, the Banner talked with Emily Colley in Ms. Valdez third grade class at Veterans Elementary before the lighting.(See attached video.)
Town Manager Sharon Lynn flipped the switch at 6 p.m. and the crowd cheered at their first sight of the 22nd annual lit up Monument. There were refreshments, a DVD commemorating this year’s 100th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone and only brief speeches.
