Beach Point fire doesn’t appear suspicious
Banner Daily Update Tues. Nov. 27
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
PROVINCETOWN — A fire at 781 Commercial St. in the far East End of the town on Beach Point, had trucks scrambling in response around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, but what at first was reminiscent of a recent string of suspected arsons appeared to have less ominous beginnings.
Firefighters quickly converged on the beachside house opposite the Mt. Gilboa water tower. Neighbors say the house has been empty for some time and there appears to be construction underway on the beach just to the left of the house. The fire initially appeared to have started outside, leading officials to worry that the suspected arsonist who has been inactive since Halloween night was at work again. But one firefighter told the Banner that once fire crews got inside, the fire appeared to have ignited there, possibly the result of a short in the wiring.
Early reports indicate the fire was stopped quickly and damage may be limited. Further investigation is ongoing and the State Fire Marshal's office sent an investigator down on Tuesday evening. If there is any reason to believe this is the work of the arsonist a further report will be issued.
