Zorro rides again — to Westminister
Banner Daily Update Sat. Dec. 29
One of Provincetown’s stately canids has made it to the top of the canine game. Zorro, a two-and-a-half-year-old Doberman pinscher who makes his home with Gabby Hanna and Marcy Feller, has had his entry accepted by the Westminster Kennel Club, qualifying to show at Madison Square Garden in New York City Feb. 11-12.
Westminster, considered to be the most prestigious event of the U.S. dog show world, is judged by top American Kennel Club judges. Zorro, whose official name is “Champion Veritas That’s So New York,” will be judged based on how well he conforms to the AKC standards for a Doberman. Approximately 2,500 dogs come from all over the world to Westminster to compete.
Zorro started showing when he was six months old and finished as a champion in July. He’s earned a total of 15 points, six of which had to be at two major shows under different judges.
In addition to his championship Zorro also earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen title. Started in 1989, the CGC program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. It’s a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.
Provincetown’s animal welfare committee issued the announcement about Zorro. That board reports that it is committed to training, socialization and general good citizenship among the Cape’s dogs and is quite proud of Zorro’s success.
