Weekend line-up
Banner Daily Update Fri. Jan. 4
By Melora B. North Banner Staff
It may be a bit water-logged out there but there’s still plenty going on. This weekend, Jan. 4 through 6, there will be art openings, readings, a party or two and even a free screening of an old seafaring favorite.
Get into the mind of an artist when Nathalie Miebach curates an exhibition of doodles, private treasures and mindful musings at the Fine Arts Work Center, 24 Pearl St. in Provincetown. An opening reception to meet the artists is held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. when not only the FAWC fellows will be exhibiting a glimpse into their creative process but the staff and members of the committees will also be taking part.
Another art opening is held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Truro Council on Aging, 346 Route 6, when local artists Anne Brock, Kate Grozier and Wendy Willard exhibit their white line prints. The works hang through the end of the month.
Jeff Spencer directs a reading of “The Last Right Boy” Wednesday at 7 p.m. as part of the New Provincetown Players winter play reading series at the Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford St. A donation of $5 is requested. Writer-poet Rosalind Pace reads at 7 p.m., also on Wednesday, at Napi’s Restaurant, Freeman Street in Provincetown. After her reading there will be an open mic when audience members are invited to mix it up.
Shake things up a bit on Sunday when Steinway artist Robert Wyatt hits the keys and progresses on a tour of the roots of jazz, from ragtime to blues to what it is today, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Route 6A in Dennis. Admission is $15 to $18.
With music on the radar, why not linger longer over the holiday season and take in a performance of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” playing locally Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church on Main Street in Chatham. Admission is $10 to $20 at the door. (Other performances are Friday at 7:30 p.m. at St. David’s Church in South Yarmouth and Saturday at 3 p.m. at Christ Church in Centerville.)
An Epiphany concert is held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, Route 28 in Harwichport, when Fred Drifmeyer directs a 45-voice chorus. A concert of bells, directed by Thom Dutton, follows.
The weekend really shapes up when there’s an “L Word” season 5 screening at 7 p.m. at the Crown & Anchor, Commercial Street in Provincetown. All guests will receive an advance copy of episode two of season five and all are invited to shake off the holiday pounds when a Hot Winter Dance follows. The doors open at 6 p.m. Another L Word party is held on Sunday at The Estate, 1 Boylston St. in Boston, at 6:30 p.m.
Catch a flick every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when WOMR radio station holds a winter film series each week at The School House, 494 Commercial St. in Provincetown. This week’s offering is Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis”(1927). A donation of $5 is suggested but the popcorn’s free. Next week “Intolerance Part 1” (1916) is on the silver screen.
For a seafaring jaunt from the comfort of your cozy seat, a Sunday series of free sea-related films will be shown at the Salt Pond Visitor Center, Route 6 in Eastham, at 1 p.m. This week’s film is “Moby Dick,” a 1956 adaptation of Herman Melville’s 1851 novel. The next film is “Mutiny on the Bounty.”
