PROVINCETOWN — The Banner received this report from East End citizen journalist Dana McCannel and thought readers would enjoy the viewpoint and photos. The errant finger pier incident occurred on Sunday, March 9 following the weekend’s high winds and rain.
McCannel says the finger pier came perilously close to breaking apart on an East End jetty before being captured wild west style by Harbormaster Luis Ribas and led back to safety.
McCannel’s comments on the incident are below.
“It rained and blew hard last night, wicked stormy. Today I looked out front as the tide was falling, and aside from a lot of boards and driftwood on the beach, was presented with the sight of one of the finger pier pontoon platforms headed right for the jetty, getting ready to scatter shards of Styrofoam all over as the base ground away against the rocks.
To the rescue, responding to mine and a succession of calls west to east, I'm sure, came Luis Ribas, harbormaster, in a boat I'd die to have, with two 150 HP engines . . . but I digress. He and another guy (Rex McKinsey) maneuvered all over in the wind and waves and managed not to bung up the boat or engines securing the thing and eventually slowly, ever so slowly (imagine how hydrodynamically a saltine box would move through the water), towed it away to be moored somewhere safe.”
