Wind farm comment period extended
Banner Daily Update Tues. Mar. 11
By Sue Harrison Banner Staff
The comment period for the proposal by Cape Wind Associates LLC to build and operate a wind farm in Nantucket Sound has been extended by the Army Corps of Engineers to March. 31. And, the Minerals Management Service has extended their comment period from March 20 to April 21. These allow the public longer to submit information about this proposal.
A hearing was held on Monday night at Mattcheese Middle School in West Yarmouth. Read a report on that meeting by Rich Eldred that was posted to the Wicked Local Provincetown website currently hosted by our sister publication The Cape Codder.
In 2004 a draft Environmental Impact Statement on the wind farm proposal was issued and since that time the Department of Interior, Minerals Management Service has become the lead federal agency on the review. MMS recently issued a new draft EIS and now the applicant has provided a draft application with minor revisions.
The project proposes to site 130 wind turbines in Nantucket Sound along with an electric service platform and submarine cables. Landfall is planned at Yarmouth. The dredge spoils would be used to form Wind Park on Horseshoe Shoal between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.
Public comments referencing this revised permit request (File #
NAE-2004-338) should be forwarded no later than March 31, 2008 to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, Regulatory Division (ATTN: Karen Adams or Kevin Kotelly), 696 Virginia Road, Concord, MA 01742-2751.
Comments can be sent by e-mail to: wind.energy@usace.army.mil.
Additional information is available from Permit Project Managers Karen Adams or Kevin Kotelly at 978-318-8338 or toll free 800-343-4789 or 800-362-4367 (if calling from within Massachusetts).
Comments to MMS can be made through April 21, using the online comment form at www.mms.gove or by mail to MMS Cape Wind Energy Project, TRC Environmental Corporation, Wannalancit Mills, 650 Suffolk Street, Lowell, Massachusetts 01854.
