PROVINCETOWN — It was a musical and food fest to remember.

With three accomplished fado singers and two guitar players, the fado dinner and fundraiser at Napi’s restaurant on Saturday, March 29, was an unqualified success.

“It went great,” says Provincetown Portuguese Festival and fado dinner organizer Don Murphy. “We had a over 50 people. … Everybody had a great time.” People are still coming up to him telling him what a great time they had, he says. “It’s something we all look forward to.”

Musical features were fadistas Celia Maria (red hair), Tania DaSilva and Daniel Guerra, accompanied by Viriato Ferreira on classical guitar and Jose Silva on Portuguese guitar. Master of ceremony duties were ably handled by the festival’s own Liliana DeSousa, who also is one of the event and festival organizers. Murphy gave a special nod to singer Celia Maria, who performed for the very first fado dinner and has been there ever since.

The concert and dinner, to benefit the Provincetown Portuguese Festival, raised well over $1,000, says Murphy.

He attributes much of the success to the generosity of hosts Napi and Helen Van Dereck, who were honored during the event for their contributions.

“Napi and Helen are just so great to us,” he says, adding, “I get involved in this stuff because I want to make a difference, but you don’t make a difference unless other people make a difference.”

This year’s Provincetown Portuguese Festival is set for June 26 to 29.
