PROVINCETOWN — Charter boat captain Rich Wood had a great inspiration a little while back — why not get a bunch of local charter boats together for one day and offer free fishing trips to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars? Ten captains signed on, and a date was set: Sunday, June 8.
Wood thought it would take some time to find vets to participate, but a fishing captain friend of his who runs the New England chapter of the USO got the word out, and before he knew it, “Baboom, we got blitzed!” Now all 10 charter boats are booked and Wood is looking for more boats to participate to accommodate the growing waiting list. Specifically, he is seeking recreational boat owners who might be willing to donate their time on June 8 to take a veteran and maybe his or her spouse and family out on the water for some quality fishing time.
Anyone who has a boat and wants to offer either a full-day’s fishing or a half-day trip — four hours in the morning or afternoon — should contact Wood at (860) 716-0202 (cell), (508) 487-0034 (work) or (508) 413-9034 (home). Or come by and see Wood at Nelson’s Bait & Tackle.
The trips are scheduled to depart from MacMillan Pier at 8 a.m. for the morning trips and at 1 p.m. for the afternoon excursions. A free outdoor lunch for all participants will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wood is also trying to put together a free breakfast. Donations of food from local restaurants, bakeries and other businesses would be greatly appreciated for either meal.
Already, $850 has been donated by various individuals to help cover the costs of the trips, and equipment is being donated as well. Contact Wood at the numbers above if you would like to contribute
.
Participating charter boats from Provincetown include Beth Ann Charters, Captain Jim’s Cape Charters, Ginny G., Excalibur and Keeping Cool. In Truro, Fin Addiction Charters, Reel Deal Charters, Schooney Charters, Hayshaker and Liza Zee are joining in.
