Arsonist targets occupied home

PROVINCETOWN – Police reported Thursday that an arsonist tried to burn an occupied house on Holway Avenue sometime in the previous 48 hours.
Acting Police Chief Warren Tobias said the owner of the home at 8 Holway Ave., Charles Welsh, called police at 6:47 pm Thursday to report scorch marks on the back of his home. Welsh said he had been in back of the house two days earlier and the marks were not there.
“We’re now graduating from unoccupied buildings to occupied buildings. This is a year-round occupied home,” Tobias said.
Previously, the arsonist or arsonists responsible for intentionally setting 18 fires since Oct. 17 had targeted businesses or homes that were empty for the season or under construction. Tobias said he was seriously concerned that people, not just structures, are now in danger.
“People need to know and need to be vigilant now more than ever,” he said, adding the state fire marshal’s office had been contacted and was scheduled to examine the crime scene something Friday afternoon.
Holway Avenue is home to several year-round residents and is adjacent to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies laboratory building.
