Police chief interviews start today

PROVINCETOWN – Public interviews of the final four candidates to become the town’s new police chief will begin today at 4 pm.

Two candidates will be interviewed by the board of selectmen at Town Hall beginning at 4 pm. The remaining two candidates will have their interviews beginning at 4 pm Wednesday, also at Town Hall. The public is invited to attend the interviews but will not be allowed to ask questions.

The four candidates, two men and two women, including local police Sgt. Carrie Lopes, are also slated to meet with representatives from the local police union.

“I’m assuming the board and union will have some dialogue with (Town Manager) Sharon (Lynn). It’s ultimately Sharon’s appointment,” said Steve Unsworth, a principal with BadgeQuest public safety consultants, who has been assisting Lynn with the selection process. Lynn said she hopes to have a new chief in place by the beginning of the summer tourist season.

The four candidates include Lopes, a male police chief from New Hampshire who has been chief in two different communities, a female department supervisor in the New York City Police Department who is currently in charge of a 200-person detective squad, and a male police captain from Rhode Island who had been in charge of the detective, patrol and training squads in the department.

“It’s a terrific pool of candidates. I’m very pleased,” Unsworth said.
Eighty-five candidates initially applied for the chief position. Lynn and Unsworth culled that to 33, who were asked to submit a more detailed application.

Acting Police Chief Warren Tobias, who has held the position since January 2007, did not apply for the permanent position, saying selectmen had voted twice in executive session not to offer him the job. Tobias has since submitted paperwork to retire on disability.

BadgeQuest was paid $8,000 to develop a candidate profile, assist in advertising and recruiting candidates, develop a candidate questionnaire and conduct telephone interviews with candidates.
