Candidate’s Night

PROVINCETOWN – Four of the five candidates running for the two selectmen seats in the May 6 election faced off Wednesday at a candidate’s night.

The candidates, Elaine Anderson, George Bryant, incumbent Michele Couture, and Bryan Green answered two formal questions from moderator Ron Robin before the floor was opened to residents to ask their questions. Candidate David Cleveland did not attend.

The five candidates to replace former selectmen Pam Parmakian in the June 3 special election also attended candidates night.

Questions included what the candidates thought was the most important challenge facing the town and what they thought a selectman’s leadership role should be. Questions from the floor ranged from whether the candidates would support a one percent real estate transfer tax to whether they would commit to producing a long term financial plan for the town by the next Town Meeting. Several of the candidates said a five-year plan was essential to the town but no one responded whether they would have a plan ready to propose by next April.

One question from Rob Tosner, chair of the visitor services board, put the candidates on the spot. Tosner asked each candidate to give one idea on how to create new revenue for the town and one idea on where to cut costs. Couture gave several suggestions in how to increase revenue, including imposing a real estate transfer tax and imposing a local meals tax at restaurants. Bryant said neighboring towns on the Outer Cape need to regionalize some services in order to share costs. Anderson wanted to use town-owned buildings to create a revenue stream either from renting or selling them. She also suggested applying for more state and federal grants as a way to boost income.
