PROVINCETOWN – Tracy Trewhella, the town’s embattled recreation director, has resigned.
Trewhella, who is under investigation by the state for allegedly sexually harassing a former employee, was not available for comment. Town manager Sharon Lynn said Trewhella told her that expectations for the job didn’t match what she had expected when she assumed the director’s position in November 2006.
“The job wasn’t all she thought it would be when she first took it,” Lynn said, acknowledging the pressure Trewhella has been under since the harassment complaint was filed.
Lynn said Trewhella, who was assistant recreation director for four years before being promoted to the $44,000 director position, had done “a wonderful job” and would be missed by the children participating in department programs as well as their parents.
“It is a loss to our town family,” Lynn said. “She turned the programs around and made them more than they were.”
Lynn said she would be speaking with assistant recreation director Brandon Motta about taking over Trewhella’s job. Ironically, funding for the assistant director position in on the May 6 election ballot as a Proposition 2 _ override. Approved by voters at April’s Town Meeting, funding for the $39,144 job could still be eliminated if voters reject the override spending.
