PROVINCETOWN – After a search through 85 candidates who applied to be the new police chief, town manager Sharon Lynn has offered the job to Jeff Jaran, currently the chief in Bow, N.H.

In addition, current Provincetown acting chief Warren Tobias will remain with the department, resuming his previous job as staff sergeant. Tobias had applied for disability retirement due to an injury suffered during a 1989 arrest. However, the Barnstable County Retirement Board turned down the application.

Lynn said her offer to Jaran is conditional based on a background check, medical examination and salary negotiations. However, she said Jaran has accepted the offer to be Provincetown’s new chief.

“He’s well-rounded,” Lynn said about Jaran. “He has 20 years in law enforcement in New Hampshire. He started as a patrol officer and was in the specialized drug enforcement unit for eight years. He was chief in two different departments. I’m confident he will be the right choice for the department.”

As for Tobias returning as staff sergeant, after selectmen voted twice in executive session not to offer him the permanent job, Lynn said his return would result in a smooth transition for Jaran because of Tobias’ 30-year experience with the department.

“He knows the officers. He knows the town. He can certainly lend a hand during the summer months,” she said. “It will be a smoother transition for the new person to come in and work with an experienced officer like Warren who has an accomplished background.”
