Singer-songwriter John Haydon will make a stop in Provincetown on Saturday, May 10, as part of his tour to promote his new CD, “Phantom Heart.”
Haydon started his CD release tour at The Lizard Lounge in Cambridge and will be traveling around New England this summer. He’s coming to Provincetown to appear live on The CosMix Show on WOMR 92.1 FM at 6 p.m. this Saturday.
“Phantom Heart” is Haydon’s fifth CD and he describes it as an “exploration of the dark, hidden realms of the heart and the happiness found in love.” He reveals that two-thirds of the songs on the new CD were written as hidden-message love letters to another songwriter he had fallen in love with.
In the 13 years he has been refining and defining his style and message, Haydon says his main thrust has been to be as honest and naked in his music as possible. Certainly he covers a lot of ground on his latest offering.
From the hypnotic and soulful “Blue Van” to the pensive, close-to-the-bone “Peel Away,” he does offer up a little slab of his soul with each song. My favorite cut is the thought-provoking “Tendril Stem.”
Sometimes his depictions of women are more idealized than real, but he puts together a wide variety of songs. His voice does not have a lot of range or depth but he uses a diversity of musical arrangements, styles and hooks to keep it all satisfying and cohesive.
The CD also draws from the talents of some of Boston’s top music makers like Russell Chudnofsy, Mike Piehl, Steve Chaggaris and Margaret Garrett.
