Vote recount on budget overrides

PROVINCETOWN – A recount of vote totals on two close budget override ballot questions is likely to take place May 16, according to town clerk Doug Johnstone.
Town manager Sharon Lynn said after the results were announced Tuesday night that she wanted a recount on two defeated overrides: a $63,594 override to pay the salaries for the assistant recreation director and 1.5 summer police officers, which failed by 10 votes; and a $106,340 override to fund up to a three percent raise for all town employees, which failed by only one vote.
Johnstone said anyone requesting a recount must take out a petition and get at least 10 registered voters to sign it. As of Thursday, Lynn had not taken out a petition but Johnstone said he anticipates that she will.
Under state election law, a registered voter has up to 10 days after an election to return a recount petition. That would make the earliest date a recount could be scheduled May 16.
