ZBA OK’s restaurant seating changes

PROVINCETOWN – Seating capacity at two local eateries was increased by the zoning board of appeals last week.

The ZBA approved two special permits, one for Clem & Ursie’s Restaurant, 87 Shank Painter Road, and another for the Vixen/Pilgrim House, 336 Commercial St. Clem & Ursie’s will be eliminating the existing market area of the store and installing 46 restaurant seats, according to Patrick Eleey, ZBA chair. Another 28 seats will be added to the restaurant’s existing outside eating area.

Eleey said owners of the Vixen/Pilgrim House were approved for a special permit to alter and reconfigure the seating at the existing inn, as well as to expand the food service there. Eleey said a restaurant would be installed in the front portion of the Vixen, which currently serves as a bar/lounge area adjacent to the back dance hall. Shawn Nightingale, part of a group of investors under agreement to purchase the Vixen and Pilgrim House, said he did not want to comment until the sale closed on what the new owners, Pharaoh Holdings, planned to do. However, Eleey said the proposed plan is to serve breakfast and dinner in the Vixen front room.

The next step for owners at both establishments will be to apply for expanded sewer service, a multi-phased process that involves winning approval from town officials and the economic development council. The Vixen/Pilgrim House is currently classified as a red dot delay, meaning it has thus far chosen not to connect to the municipal sewer system. However, the new owners reportedly want to connect, as do the other individually owned businesses housed in the same complex. That would involve adding almost 8,000 gallons of capacity to the sewer system, department of public works director David Guertin said, producing much-needed revenue for the sewer operating fund.
