Ball May Show Fine Costumes

“Yes, we’re all ready for the annual Artist’s Ball tomorrow night,” said Anton Van Dereck, general ball chairman for the Provincetown Art Association, today, “and we are hoping for an exceptionally fine showing of costumes which in past years made our affairs truly famous throughout the country.

“At one time our summer people and all year residents started planning their next year’s costumes almost before the strains of ‘Home Sweet Home’ of the last ball had died away. There was real, if not deadly, rivalry and painstaking efforts and ingenuity went into the fashioning of the marvelous costumes. Those Artists’ balls of years were something to remember.

“We would like to revive that interest, make these affairs again beautiful pageants. It can be done. This year Mr. and Mrs. Reeves Euler have opened a costume rental place at 339 Commercial Street with a wide variety of costumes selected especially to fit into the theme of the ball ‘Old Cape Cod.’ So even visitors here for a short time can find a costume that may win one of the truly worthwhile prizes — paintings by George Elmer Browne, Harold Wrenn, Ross Moffett, John Foster, Margery Windust, Philip Malicoat and John “Kitty” Enos, that famous primitive whose work is in such demand.”

Music at the ball in Town Hall tomorrow evening will be furnished by Harry Marshard’s orchestra.

Wellfleet Schools Get Kindergarten

When Wellfleet schools open on Wednesday, Sept. 6, a kindergarten class will be added to the school system for the first time.

Sydney G. Pierce, Superintendent, said that 23 children are enrolled and there may be room for a few more.

Two rooms formerly used for chemistry and retarded children have been remodeled into one large room and painted in soft shades of pink and gray. The furniture, painted in bright colors, was purchased at the cost of $650. The over-all cost for setting up the kindergarten department will be about $6,000, according to Superintendent Pierce.

Mrs. Adele Whitmarsh of Osterville, a graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers College, has been appointed as the new kindergarten teacher.
The Whiting Milk Company received the contract to supply milk for the year at six cents each half-pint. The next lowest bid was from Hood Milk Company.

Bids have been asked for painting the gymnasium ceiling and replacing tiles.
Manuel Thimas of Wellfleet will repair the playground by hardening it and filling in where water has eroded it at an estimated cost of $685.

Peddler’s License Revoked

The Provincetown selectmen voted Monday to revoke Melanie Mitzner’s fruitcart peddler’s license, charging that she continued to block traffic on Commercial Street.

The peddler’s licenses have been a source of contention all summer. In July the selectmen voted to restrict peddlers to Bradford Street. Earlier regulations permitted them to travel on side streets adjacent to Commercial Street. In this way peddlers attracted strollers from Commercial Street.
The selectmen charged that peddlers were abusing this privilege and restricted them to Bradford Street. Mitzner appeared before the selectmen last week and charged that their restrictions were forcing her out of business. She said no one would buy fruit from a vendor on Bradford Street, and the hills on Bradford Street were difficult to negotiate with an 80-pound pushcart.

Two selectmen observed Mitzner on Commercial Street during the last week. They voted to revoke her license for flagrantly ignoring their regulations. On Saturday, sensing her business days were nearing an end, Mitzner gave away peaches and pineapples on Commercial Street.
