Advocate Archives

In this week’s look back into the Advocate Archives, we visit the years of 1938, 1954, 1966 and 1984 and read about library book delivery service, the end of an era for a Provincetown-Boston Airlines plane, and a lost bid for a new fire station.

March 24, 1938
Library Adds Service, Books By Messenger To Any Home in Town
The Provincetown library now offers a new service to the people of Provincetown. The librarian has announced that with the cooperation of the Western Union Telegraph Company books may be delivered or called for in any part of the town by messenger.

This added convenience is in keeping with the library’s policy of maximum service to the community. It is hoped by the librarian that many shut-ins and others who are unable to visit the library in person because of sickness and disability will thus be able to make use of their library’s excellent facilities.

Any person wishing to have books delivered either to the library or to his home for a nominal charge may avail himself of this new service by simply calling “Western Union” on the telephone.

March 25, 1954
Provincetown Airport Notes End of Era
John Van Arsdale ferried the Cessna 140 from Provincetown to Providence on Monday of this week on what was the last flight under Provincetown-Boston Airlines Inc. ownership. The plane was bought in Providence by Arthur Dexter of Lakewood, Rhode Island. The sale of this single engine airplane which was used primarily for air carrier operations in past years represents the end of an era in Provincetown operations. Henceforth all flying of passengers will be done exclusively in twin engine aircraft.

March 24, 1966
Telephone Man To Demonstrate New Dial System in Provincetown
The Telephone Company will put on a demonstration of how the new dial system will work in Provincetown at the Town Hall on April 12, from 4 to 9 p.m. The demonstration will be primarily for those who think they might experience difficulty with the new dial telephones, and will deal with the proper way to dial, as well as to how the dial tone, busy signal, or other malfunctioning signals may sound. Anyone who thinks he might have difficulty with the new system is invited to attend the demonstration, which will also be accompanied by a short four-minute film.

March 22, 1984
Meads wants station cleaned up
Provincetown Police Chief James J. Meads lost his bid for a new police station last Thursday when Special Town Meeting rejected his request for $965,000 to build a new station on state-owned land at Alden near Route 6.

Voters were willing to accept the donation of the state-owned land, but they made it clear that the actual building of a new station could wait, even though Meads explained that “a severe medical problem” exists in the current station that cannot be tolerated.

Meads told special town meeting that seven of his officers have suffered inner-ear infections attributed to the growth of mold and fungi in the station as a result of poor ventilation and humidity.

One officer had to be transported to the hospital, he said.

Meads had the support of Selectmen Peter Boyle, Edward M. Rudd and Charles Rogers Thursday, while Selectmen Avellar and Bryant did not vote for the new station. Bryant said he was not convinced the proposed location is the right one for the building.

Boyle was applauded after he said the station is in such a deplorable condition that “if it were a church, you certainly wouldn’t worship there; if it was a restaurant, you wouldn’t think of eating there; and if it were the Manor, you wouldn’t put your parents there.”
