Former Congressman Gerry E. Studds dies at 69
Former Massachusetts Congressman Gerry E. Studds, longtime champion of New England fishermen and the ocean environment, and the first openly gay person elected to the United States Congress, died Saturday morning at Boston University Medical Center. He had been hospitalized after sustaining head injuries from an accident while walking his dog. He was 69.
He is survived by Dean T. Hara, his husband and partner, who was at his bedside when he died. Studds and Hara were among the first same-sex couples to be legally married in Massachusetts in 2004.
Mr. Studds was well known and well respected in Congress and in Provincetown where he maintained a home for many years. He was instrumental in creating and passing many pieces of legislation related to the Coast Guard and fishing that had positive effects on his district. He fought oil drilling on Georges Bank, helped enact the Marine Mammal Protection Act and worked on the restoration of the striped bass population among so many other contributions.
His voice was strong on numerous other issues of importance to Cape Codders.
