Voters put town water back on the table

EASTHAM — Voters put municipal water back on the table Tuesday night at town election and decided newcomer Carol Martin and incumbent David Schropfer will each serve a three-year term on the board of selectmen.
The only question on the ballot asked voters whether or not the town should go forward with efforts to implement a 20-year, $73.4 million plan to provide municipal water for roughly 6,000 people in town. The results show 714 votes in favor and 507 against.
By looking at voting results on the issue from Town Meeting and the election, Schropfer estimates that “clearly six out of 10 voters want town water.” He considers it an “obligation to present it again at Town Meeting.”
Prior to the election, selectmen agreed to hold a Special Town Meeting in the coming months if the municipal water question received a majority of favorable votes. The purpose of the meeting would be to gain the needed 2/3 support at Town Meeting that the plan didn’t receive May 7.
Martin was the big winner in the race for two open selectmen seats by receiving 952 votes. At press time, Martin was unavailable for comment. Schropfer came in behind her with 844 votes and James Ludwig received 407. Martin, who has served on the finance committee and housing task force, brings four years of public service to the position as well as seven years’ experience working as assistant to the town administrator. Schropfer brings three years of public service in Eastham to the board, two years on the finance committee and one year as selectman, in addition to 20 years he served on civic boards in Stamford, Conn.
Results of the uncontested races are Edward Brookshire for a three-year term on the Nauset Regional School committee (1,057 votes), Sean Fleming for a three-year term on the Eastham Elementary School committee (1,021 votes), and Ian Aitchison for a three-year term as a library trustee (1,032 votes). A total of 1,267 out of 4,079 registered voters participated in Tuesday’s election.
