PROVINCETOWN — Plans to renovate the Herring Cove interchange on Route 6 have been finalized and are expected to go out for bid in the next few months, according to Cape Cod National Seashore Supt. George Price.

The plan calls for several changes to the current configuration of Route 6 and the turn-off to the entrance to the Herring Cove beach parking lot. Currently, Route 6 narrows from four lanes to two just before the Herring Cove turn off. The new plan will move the lane narrowing to approximately 200 to 300 yards east of the intersection, at the beginning of the Seashore property line.

In addition, the current entrance-exit to the Herring Cove parking lots will be changed to an entrance-only. Visitors will exit the parking lot via separate lanes at the far end of both Herring Cove parking lots.

“This will create clearer lines for permit holders and day-payers. We think that will improve traffic flow,” Price said.

Ben Pearson, the park’s maintenance chief, said the renovations will cost approximately $800,000. Construction is expected to begin next fall and take a few months to complete, he said. Financing for the project will be provided by the federal parks service.

The Provincetown police and fire departments were consulted about the new configuration. However, acting Police Chief Warren Tobias said he did not see any particular benefit in moving the Route 6 four-to-two-lane narrowing farther back from the Herring Cove intersection.

In other Seashore news, Price announced that the park has received $2.65 million in funding for alternative transportation projects. The projects are part of the planning done by the Cape Cod Transit Task Force, a collaborative public-private effort that developed both five-year and long-range public transportation plans for Cape Cod.

The largest part of the funding, $1.85 million, will be used to replace Provincetown-Truro Shuttle buses with five bio-diesel mini-buses similar to the Flex buses. The National Seashore obtained the funding to purchase the existing vehicles, that are at the end of their useful lives and need to be replaced, Price said.

Another $450,000 will be used to purchase a tram to facilitate alternative transportation beach access at the Seashore. The current tram system connects Coast Guard Beach to a remote parking lot at Little Creek in Eastham.

$250,000 of the funding will pay for a study to develop an Outer Cape integrated parking and transit plan. The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge project also will receive $100,000 to fund a planning study to expand the Flex to Chatham and provide access to Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
