From Truro to Eastham
Banner Staff
In Truro the water issued bubbled to the surface again as selectmen from both towns met to talk, sometimes contentiously, about additional public wells. Truro residents also dealt with growth issues in different ways as large homes were proposed to replace more modest ones inside the Seashore and a proposal for a large home that would sit squarely in the middle of what came to be called the Edward Hopper viewscape.
Wellfleet’s town manager Tim Smith left after five years but a new hire was on the horizon by year’s end. The long debated firehouse finally gets the nod for both its plan and its financing. Downtown, the former Catholic Church on Main Street gained momentum as the proposed Wellfleet Preservation Hall. The town rallied around Caleb Potter after his tragic July 4th skateboarding accident and Chopper Young continued on his path for world domination in the realm of oyster shucking as he raked in one title after another.
Also in Wellfleet, the Drive-In turned 50 and the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater completed its new facility on Route 6. The WHAT Julie Harris stage opened in June and the original WHAT on the harbor continued with a full schedule.
Eastham’s elementary school renovation was finally complete, mostly, though acrimonious charges flew about delayed completion dates and cost overruns. The tide of opinion rolled in and out on the issue of the proposed parking lot at Ocean Beach. The question appears headed back one more time.
Also headed back is the question of whether the long-running hostel in Eastham will be able to continue operations. The town’s zoning precludes it from operating where it is and it may have lost its grandfathered status when the lot it sits on was subdivided a few years back.
For stories on each of these towns see this week’s Provincetown Banner.
