Vandal targets restaurant
By Pru Sowers Banner Staff
PROVINCETOWN — Police are pursuing leads in a vandalism incident that caused significant damage to Jimmy’s Hideaway, a restaurant on Commercial Street.
According to co-owner Jimmy McNulty, he discovered the vandalism last Wednesday when he arrived at the restaurant to let an electrician in. The front door was ajar and when McNulty entered he found all the sinks in the bathrooms and kitchen had been plugged with paper towels and the water taps left on full force, causing them to overflow onto the floor. In addition, the catch valve on the kitchen deep fryers had been opened, with the oil emptying out onto the kitchen floor. The dishwasher water hose had also been turned on and left to flood the kitchen.
“The kitchen was full of water and oil,” investigating police Officer Glenn Enos said Tuesday.
The vandalism continued into the front restaurant space, where the beer taps at the bar had been left open and the kegs emptied all over the bar counter. In addition, damage was done to a computer keyboard used to enter food orders from the bar.
Nothing was apparently stolen, Enos said, and police suspect entry was made through an unlocked back window. However, the vandal or vandals exited through the front door and left it ajar.
The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Dept. took photos and fingerprints at the scene. Enos said they found some fingerprints that may belong to the person or persons responsible. Police are working through a list of suspects with the restaurant owners.
McNulty, who opened the seasonal restaurant with his partner last spring, received a year-round license in the fall and stayed open through the winter. The vandalism did not affect business because it happened mid-week when the restaurant was closed, giving McNulty time to do the clean up.
“I went home, had a glass of wine and just lost it,” he said, recalling the impact of the incident after he had spent most of the day cleaning up the mess. “You work so hard and then something like this happens. We’re just trying to provide a place with good food where people feel comfortable.”
